Amidst the political upheavals and religious tensions of the Reformation, some Christian faith groups shared a common place of worship in some communities. Although mostly located within the Holy Roman Empire, examples of church sharing existed across early modern Europe. Prompted by political directives, legal rights and privileges, local accommodations, or economic necessity rather than an aspiration for religious co-existence, by the seventeenth century these arrangements gradually became legally defined as "simultaneous" churches (<i>simultanea, Simultankirchen</i>). These essays explore and illustrate the circumstances that led communities to share churches, the nature and character of these arrangements, and how this worked in practice.
