For many years, I have had the privilege of serving people in two distinct yet complementary roles: as an ordained minister of the Gospel and as a clinical psychologist. Through these experiences, I have walked alongside individuals from all walks of life-people burdened by emotional pain, destructive habits, broken relationships, recurring failures, and spiritual struggles. Some came seeking counselling for depression, anxiety, addiction, anger, guilt, or family conflict. Others came seeking prayer, spiritual guidance, and a deeper understanding of God's purpose for their lives.
Over the years, I began to notice a recurring pattern. Many sincere Christians genuinely loved God, attended church faithfully, read their Bibles, and desired to live holy lives.
Yet despite their sincere efforts, they often found themselves trapped in the same cycles of defeat. Some battled addictions they could not seem to overcome. Others wrestled with fear, bitterness, lust, rejection, shame, or destructive emotional patterns. They repeatedly confessed their sins, prayed for victory, and made fresh commitments to God, only to find themselves returning to the same struggles.
As I listened to their stories, I became increasingly convinced that many believers were addressing only the visible symptoms of their problems while overlooking the deeper roots beneath the surface. Like gardeners who continually pick bad fruit from a diseased tree, they focused on behaviours while failing to identify the hidden causes that continued to nourish those behaviours.
It was during this period of ministry that the Lord impressed upon my heart a simple but powerful image: the image of a tree.
A tree does not begin with its fruit. Fruit is merely the visible evidence of something deeper. Behind every fruit are branches. Behind every branch is a trunk. Beneath the trunk lies a hidden root system. If the roots remain untouched, the tree continues to live and produce the same fruit year after year.
This image became an important framework through which I began to understand many of the struggles people face. The "evil tree" described in this book represents those hidden influences that produce destructive fruit in our lives. The visible fruit may be anger, fear, addiction, depression, lust, bitterness, jealousy, rebellion, or other forms of bondage. Yet beneath these visible manifestations often lie deeper roots that require careful examination and prayerful attention.
This book explores those roots from a biblical perspective. It examines the possibility that some patterns of sin and brokenness may be connected not only to our personal choices but also to influences inherited through family systems, learned behaviours, emotional wounds, spiritual strongholds, and what some Christian traditions describe as generational iniquities. While Christians hold differing views regarding these matters, my purpose is not to promote controversy but to encourage honest reflection and thoughtful study of Scripture.
Throughout this book, I have sought to maintain a balance between spiritual realities and practical wisdom. Human beings are complex creatures whose lives are shaped by physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual influences. True healing often requires attention to all these dimensions of human experience.
