Sifting through the WikiTrees and Yocham/Yochum/Yocum/Yoakum family files on Ancestry.com and Family Search leaving you with your head spinning? I feel your pain! There is a lot out there about this family; regretfully much of it still being in error. You may be descended from an Ozark Yoakum (by any of the various spellings), but how reliable is what you can find or have been previously told? This is a fact based history and genealogy of the Missouri and Arkansas Ozark family of Jacob and Sarah Yoakum including many of their descendants bearing the surnames YOCHAM, YOCHUM, YOCUM, YOAKUM, and YOKUM who were (and many still are), resident in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas sourced from records, history, and previously published information. Many people descended from this family line still mistakenly connect themselves back to Jacob Yoakum's brother Solomon, more than do his own true descendants! Considerable confusion exist as to who the brothers even were. For anyone wanting to know which Yoakum they actually descend from this book will be helpful. For those who already know, there is a lot of new and interesting biographical information. This author having spent over 45 years personally researching this particular family presents needed clarifications as well as carefully examining some of the many myths and legends such as the famed Yoachum Silver Mine and the reportedly minted Yoachum Silver Dollars, as well as many others.More than two hundred years have passed since Jacob Yoakum and his family left a comfortable home on the banks of the Clinch River in Tennessee to settle in the great western expanse of Jefferson’s Louisiana Territory. That they were able not only to survive but flourish in the wild, rugged, and often harsh home Jacob had chosen for them is testimony enough to amply personify both their character and considerable fortitude. The land was as harsh and unforgiving as it was pristinely beautiful and the people who succeeded there did so solely on their own strong will and dogged determination. The history of the Jacob Yoakum family is every bit the history of the settlement of the Ozarks, such as it has progressed since having commenced as being a part of the United States. This work is for the brave pioneers Jacob and Sarah Yoakum and their amazing story, which needs no embellishment to be interesting as well as noteworthy. Read more
