Its powerful engine necessitated a 13 feet 4 inch propeller, making it the first American fighter to surpass 400 MPH. Nicknamed 'Whistling Death' by the Japanese, this iconic aircraft with its distinctive bent wings played a significant role in the Korean War. After the North's invasion of South Korea in 1950, VMF-323 provided air support, earning its name after pilots killed a large rattlesnake. They participated in major operations like the Inchon landing and Chosin Reservoir breakout, transitioning to VMA-323 in 1952, and left Korea in 1953.
