The Price is for the 1970 1/2 Pound (50 Piaster) Coin with "0." on the reverse. If you would like the even larger 1 Pound coin (same front design, see last photo for back), it is double the price. Please enter "2" in the quantity box to receive the 1 Pound coin. Please email if you'd like BOTH coins. Gamal Abdel Nasser was the most popular Arab leader of the 20th Century. He led the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 which overthrew the moarchy upon King Farouk's death. He introduced land reforms, nationalized the Suez Canal and prevailed against the West during the Suez Crisis. As an officer during the 1948 Arab-Israel War he was wounded when his brigade was surrounded by the Israeli Army. Appeals for help from Transjordan's Arab Legion went unheeded, but the brigade refused to surrender. Negotiations between Israel and Egypt finally resulted in the ceding of Faluja to Israel. He became a national hero for enduring Israeli bombardment while isolated from his command. Still stationed after the war in the Faluja enclave, Nasser agreed to an Israeli request to identify 67 killed soldiers of the "religious platoon" led by Rabbi Shlomo Goren and Nasser personally accompanied him, ordering the Egyptian soldiers to stand at attention. They spoke briefly and after learning what the square phylacteries found with the soldiers were, Nasser told him that he "now understands their courageous stand". During an interview on Israeli TV in 1971, Rabbi Goren claimed the two agreed to meet again when the time of peace comes. Nassar was instrumental in the formation of the PLO and laid the groundwork for Anwar Sadat's later success in recovering the Sinai Peninsula from Israel. Upon his death in 1970, 5 million mourners filled the streets of Cairo. This very rare silver coin was issued the same year to honor his life! It remains in excellent light circulated condition. The 50 Piaster coin is almost 1.5" wide while the 1 Pound coin is almost 1.75".

  • Issued upon Nassar's Death in 1970, this is one of the most sought after Arabic coins in the world.
